Camp Caretaker

The RMC caretakers are the face of the RMC for visitors, welcoming and assisting guests, while ensuring proper maintenance and functioning of the camps. Two caretakers are hired for the summer, one for Gray Knob and one for Crag Camp. The rest of the year the caretakers stay at Gray Knob while supervising the camps. Two caretakers are hired for each season, working an alternating schedule of one week on, one week off.

Schedule

Summer caretakers generally work 10 days on, 4 days off, with both caretakers overlapping on the weekend. In the off-season (Fall, Winter, Spring seasons) two caretakers rotate with a one week on, one week off schedule.

Duration of position
Summer: Mid-May to the first week of September.
Fall: September-November
Winter: December-March
Spring: April and May

Season duration is approximate. Some scheduling flexibility is possible. 

Responsibilities:

  • Welcoming and assisting guests
  • Collecting overnight fees
  • Routine camp maintenance and cleaning
  • Maintaining the operation of the camps’ composting toilets
  • Nightly rounds to the other camps
  • Packing up supplies and construction materials
  • Some light trail work
  • Basic repairs and other miscellaneous projects
Required Experience
Applicants for the position should be familiar with the trails of the Northern Presidentials, have a reasonable amount of outdoors and backcountry experience and good interpersonal skills. First aid training is strongly encouraged, but is not a requirement. We look for enthusiastic, self-motivated and mature individuals.
 
Compensation and Benefits

Caretakers receive $100 per night on the mountain.
