The Field Supervisor plays a key role in guiding the RMC’s trail and camp employees. This person is directly responsible for managing the RMC’s eight-person summer trail crew, coordinating trail projects, and work at our four camps.
- Supervises Gray Knob, Crag Camp, The Perch and The Log Cabin.
- Trains and supervises RMC’s two summer caretakers.
- Assures effective composting for RMC’s four continuously composting toilets, and other repair and maintenance efforts.
- Supervises summer and fall trail crews. RMC fields two trail crews comprised of 8 individuals.
- Responsible for all aspects of the season’s field projects.
- Assures high quality work standards, safe working conditions, maintenance of equipment.
- Compiles and maintains trails logs.
- Maintains both hand and power tools.
- Communicates with RMC Trails Committee Chair.
- Liaises with USFS and other land managers and cooperators.
- Oversees and engages in light construction, composting, and many related responsibilities.
The Field Supervisor generally works the majority of the week with the trail crews, and the remainder of the time at RMC’s shelters.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, conscientious and an excellent leader. Previous work experience should include a minimum of several seasons in the New England backcountry, including at least one season on a trail crew and at least one season in a supervisory role. For the right candidate, this is an excellent opportunity to lead a seasonal program.
The candidate will be walking or hiking several miles on given days, sometimes packing in materials for trail or camps work, and engaging in repairs and light construction.
Approximately mid-May to the first week of September. Some scheduling flexibility is possible.
The Field Supervisor pay is commensurate with experience and is based on a forty-hour week. Housing is provided in a private apartment at the RMC Stearns Lodge in Randolph.
