Trail Adopter Guidelines and Rules

RMC Trail Adopter Guidelines and Rules

1. Tools: Hand tools only (e.g., hand saw, bow saw, loppers, or an axe – if you know how to use one). Axe use in WMNF requires USFS axe training. If you encounter something that requires power tools, please advise the Trail Adopter Coordinator, and our professional trail crew will handle it.

2. Protection: Protective eyewear and gloves must always be worn. RMC will supply protective eyewear for anyone needing it.

3. New trail: Never cut a new trail. if you are uncertain where a trail goes, refrain from cutting until you can verify that you are on the right trail.

4. Blazing is prohibited unless you have been cleared by the RMC Trails Adopter Coordinator. RMC has very strict guidelines for blazing.

5. Always come prepared. Make sure to pack food, water, a map, a first aid kit, layers, rain protection, and a headlamp. You are responsible for being adequately prepared for the challenges of the White Mountains (rough trail conditions, changing weather, etc. ).

6. Always work within your comfort level, and don’t put yourself in harm’s way!

7. Let someone reliable know when and where you are working so that If you run into trouble and need help, someone will know that and appropriate help can be sent. Take a cell phone with you. However, reception is spotty along many trails, so only depend partially on your phone.

8. Please let us know if you can’t continue as a trial adopter. We understand that things change and other responsibilities may get in the way. If this is the case, it is best that we find another volunteer to take on the task.

9. Please download a trail maintenance log form on our website. We can email you a PDF or send you a few via regular mail.
