Crag Camp

Location
Located at 4,247 feet, on the edge of King Ravine, along the Spur Trail, Crag Camp has fine views of the Ravine, the Knife Edge, Mts. Madison and Adams, and much of Northern New Hampshire.

The Facility
Crag Camp has overnight room for 20 guests. A caretaker is on hand mid-June through August and on some busier non-summer weekends. There is no stove and the Crag Camp is not insulated, so in the off season it gets very cold inside.

Overnight Fees

In the evening, the caretaker greets guests and collects fees. Overnight guests must have a means of payment with them: cash or credit card.

Onsite
Mattresses are available for use, though guests are encouraged to pack sleeping pads for general preparedness. Counter space and stove boards are provided for cooking. Guests are required to bring their own cooking stoves and utensils. Please note that use of liquid-fuel stoves is prohibited inside RMC camps.  Water is available from a spring, approximately a quarter mile west on the Gray Knob Trail. There is no running water in the shelter. Crag Camp has an outhouse equipped with a composting toilet.

Camping
Crag Camp is located within a Forest Protection Area. If you plan to camp, be aware that because of unsuitable terrain and vegetation it will be necessary to travel more than one quarter mile away from the camps to find a suitable location. Camping in the alpine zone is strictly prohibited unless there is at least two feet of snowpack.  To protect this fragile area from overuse, U.S. Forest Service backcountry personnel routinely patrol for illegal camping. Please refer to the White Mountain National Forest Home Page for more information about Forest Protection Areas.

Please see the RMC’s general guidelines for further information.
